Changing LivesThroughService
We bring together volunteers — including those who have recently been released from prison — to serve and support people experiencing homelessness across Sydney.
Restore Dignity,
Build Compassion
Freedom to Help is a community outreach initiative in Sydney that brings together volunteers — including individuals who have recently been released from prison — to serve and support people experiencing homelessness.
When people who have faced hardship help those in need, lives change on both sides. Helping others often becomes the first step toward rebuilding one's own life.
“Restore dignity, build compassion, and create new purpose through helping others.”
— Freedom to Help
Many people leaving prison struggle to reconnect with society. At the same time, thousands in Sydney face homelessness and social isolation. Freedom to Help bridges these two challenges — turning shared hardship into shared healing.
Through volunteering and community service, we help participants:
Rebuild self-worth
Helping others gives participants a renewed sense of purpose and value through acts of genuine service.
Develop empathy and understanding
Through service, volunteers gain deep understanding of the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness.
Reconnect with the community
Volunteering creates positive social bonds and helps participants re-engage meaningfully with society.
Replace past behaviours with meaningful action
Community service provides a constructive and purposeful alternative that supports lasting personal change.
Create positive pathways for the future
Helping others opens doors to new direction, responsibility and a renewed sense of what is possible.

A Different Perspective
Many volunteers in our program have experienced life in prison and understand hardship firsthand. Through volunteering, they gain a powerful realization:
“Helping someone who has less than you can change the way you see life.”
It teaches gratitude, responsibility, and compassion.
Freedom to Help is about transforming experience into purpose.
Transforming Experience
